Emerald
Ash Borer: Emeral ash borer is a very invasive
insect native to Asia probably brought in by ships or airplanes
transporting solid wood packing material. It was discovered
in southestern Michigan in 2002 and since then has been found
in Ohio, northern Indiana, northern Illinois and Maryland,
western Pennsylvania and West Virginia, and Wisconsin, Missouri,
and Virginia. The adult beetles only consume the foliage of
the ash trees and cause very little damage, however, the larvae
tend to feed on the inner bark of the ash trees, disrupting
the tree's ability to transport water and nutrients.
Since its discovery, the emerald
ash borer has killed tens of millions of ash trees in all
the states listed above. It has caused agencies to try to
contain the infestation by setting up quarantines for the
infested areas and keep it from spreading to others. The borer
has also cost municipalities, property owners, nursery operators
and forest products industries tens of millions of dollars.
